Glaciers, whales and mountain towns reachable only by water
Much of coastal Alaska has no road connection at all, which is exactly why a cruise works so well here. Your ship threads through the Inside Passage, stops in frontier towns like Skagway and Ketchikan, and spends a full day among glaciers β no long drives or bush flights required.
Expect at least one day of scenic cruising at Glacier Bay, Hubbard Glacier, College Fjord or Tracy Arm, with naturalists narrating from the bridge.
Humpbacks feeding near Juneau, eagles over Ketchikan, sea otters and, on land tours, bears and moose.
Skagway's White Pass railway climbs the route Klondike prospectors took in 1898.
Land on a glacier by helicopter, take a floatplane over Misty Fjords, or try dog-sledding on summer snow.
Choose a one-way cruise and pair it with a few nights inland at Denali National Park.

June and July bring the longest days and mildest weather. May and September are quieter and usually cheaper, with good whale sightings β pack warmer layers.
Round-trip from Seattle or Vancouver keeps flights simple. One-way routes reach more glaciers and let you add Denali, but you'll fly into one city and home from another.
Heading north, the right (starboard) side faces the coast more often; heading south it's the left. On glacier days the ship usually turns so both sides get a view.
